Principles of Meditation
June 17, 2008 · No Comments
According to Swami Vishnu Devananda, meditation is “….a continuous flow of perception or thought, just like the flow of water in a river.” A practice wherein there is constant observation of the mind, meditation brings awareness, harmony and natural order into life. It helps you dig deep into your inner self to discover the wisdom and tranquility that lie within.

Principles of Meditation
The basic points to be kept in mind in practicing meditation are :
Have a special place and specific time for meditation. Try doing it daily.
Choose a time when your mind is not clouded with worries.
Sit up straight with your back, neck and head in one line. Facing north or east.
Condition your mind such so as to remain quiet for the duration of your meditation session.
Regulate your breathing. Start with 5 minutes of deep breathing. Then gradually slow it down.
Follow a rhythmic breathing pattern - inhale and exhale.
Initially let your mind wander. It grows more restless if you force to concentrate.
Then slowly bring it to rest on the focal point of your choice.
Hold your object of concentration at this focal point throughout your session.
Meditation happens when you reach a state of pure thought. Even while retaining an awareness of duel self.
Followed diligently you will soon be able to attain a super-conscious state.
Tips on Concentration
At the outset, it is hard to keep your attention to keep focussed on one object.
So it is better to start off by limiting your field of concentration to a category of objects.
Choose your objects with care e.g. any four flowers, fruits, trees…etc. You must feel at ease with what you choose.
After concentrating on one, you can move on to the next, if & when your mind starts wandering.
This style of meditative exercise will help you control your mind down to a finer focus, teaching you the principle of single point concentration.

Summer Beauty Tips
June 13, 2008 · 1 Comment
By Juliana Day
Summer is a great time for relaxation, recreation and renewal. If you’re like most of us, you probably take advantage of the longer days and warm weather to enjoy extra time with family and friends. While enjoying the hot, lazy days of summer, keep in mind that different beauty rules apply. Here are a few tips to keep you looking as good as you feel:
Summer Hair Care
-
If you spend lots of time outdoors and want to spice up your look naturally, try combing a little lemon juice through your hair. The sun will lighten those strands faster than your locks sans lemon, giving you an attractive sun-streaked look. It’s also easier on your budget than salon highlights.
- Be sure to deep condition your hair at least once a week, especially if you swim a lot. Hair tends to become dry, dull and brittle if it is soaked and dried too often.
- If you like to swim lengths, try spritzing on some leave-in conditioner under your swim cap to help ward off damage from chlorine and salt water.
Summer Skincare Tips
-
It may be hip to be tanned, and it does tend to camouflage a multitude of imperfections, but don’t deep-fry your skin for the sake of fashion. Your best bet is a high quality bronzer in a bottle. The Body Shop has a great all-natural formula. Just remember to use a facial scrub prior to application to slough off any dead skin cells. You may also want to use a pair of gloves, lest your palms turn orange!
-
If you spend lots of time outside, be sure to use sunscreen with minimum SPF 15. The cancer-preventing benefits are obvious, but protection is also a must for those of us who don’t want to look old before our time.
-
Make sure that you are adequately hydrated - at least 8 glasses of water a day and even more when you are outside.
-
If you do burn, apply Aloe Vera or lotions containing it. This will cool and soothe your skin and help you to heal faster. A personal trick is to apply cream containing zinc to my face at night. This is an effective way of healing my burn by the morning.
-
Nothing is more revolting than skin full of little red mosquito or bug bites, not to mention the new threat of West Nile Virus, so don’t forget the bug spray. You may want to try one of the new two-in-one sunscreen and insect repellants.
-
For a quick skin boost in the sun, fill a misting bottle with a little bit of toner and water, and spritz your face and body for a quick cool off. Just remember to close your eyes so you don’t risk burning them.
Summer Make-up Tips

- Take on summer with a fresh face forward - less is best! Accentuate your glowing skin by brushing on a light shimmering powder instead of a heavy foundation. You don’t want to appear like you are melting under the hot sun.
- Those of you who read my column know that I’m a big advocate of the powder bronzer. This is a great way to give yourself a pretty glow. I like to use a matte finish on my face and then a shimmer powder on my eyelids, above my cheekbones, and on my shoulders and collarbone.
- A hot look on a bronzed face is shiny lip gloss. The BEST is “Lip Glass” by MAC. It gives you ultra shine over lipstick (applied with a brush) or on its own. Plus, it stays put - a big bonus for die-hard lip gloss wearers!
-
Try a light shimmering eye shadow in beige just under your brow bone to draw attention to your eyes.
-
If you are wear mascara, try a waterproof. This way you will avoid “Raccoon Eyes” when you are perspiring or near water. Don’t forget the must-have partner, eye make-up remover, or else you really will end up with the dreaded dark circles!
My number one beauty booster tip is simple: relax…and summer is the perfect time to do it. Take time to sit back, relax and enjoy time with your friends and family. Check back with LifeToolsforWomen in September for my fall beauty and fashion tips.

There are several types of bikini wax, one of them being the Brazilian bikini wax. Many women opt for the standard bikini wax which consists of removing the pubic hair on the bikini line. Another bikini wax option is the full bikini wax which stands for removing all the pubic hair except for the hair in the most sensitive areas. Those women that choose Brazilian bikini wax actually choose to remove all the pubic hair, unlike the other solutions shown above.
A Brazilian bikini wax is not a thing you can do at home, by yourself. So the best advice is to see a professional once you decide you want to take a Brazilian bikini wax. Otherwise, you risk serious damage to your skin, pain and an unaesthetic look in the end, which is the exact opposite of what you wanted.
In order to find a professional, search for a salon that performs such operations. A good source of information is “Yellow Pages” or the internet, where you can search for salons, by using the keywords “Brazilian wax”, plus the name of the city you live in.
There are some things that you need to find out before letting yourself in their hands. Try to find out how many Brazilian bikini wax the salon does every week and if the person in charge of these operations is, indeed, a professional. To find put more by the quality of their services, try to talk to someone that had there a Brazilian bikini wax.
Keep in mind that a Brazilian bikini wax is not cheap. It may cost even 100 dollars, but you may find places where it is done for a cheaper price. The average cost is about 50 dollars, so avoid salons that are doing it cheaper as they cannot assure a professional treatment.
After you get scheduled and you are ready for the big day, start with a warm shower and clean your pubic area gentle but thoroughly. You will be invited to stay on a bed in a private room. You may choose to keep your knees up or legs down, depending on how you feel more comfortable. The professional will then shorten your pubic hair with scissors.
Only after the hair is shortened to one quarter of an inch, the waxing process can begin. Warm wax will be applied on the pubic area so you will not feel any bad sensations in this stage. The professional waits for the wax to cool down, then pulls it along with your hair. Be prepared to experience some pain. You will get used to it after you repeat it, so the first time is actually the most painful one. Also, you may be required to assume some uncomfortable positions, so the professional gets to all the parts that need waxing.
The pain you may feel is the main reason why you must choose a professional to do the work. Depending on the skill of the person performing the Brazilian bikini wax, the job can be done quick and without much pain. Even so, if you feel that the pain is too much for you to handle, ask the professional to stop for a little.
After waxing, the pubic area is treated with a soothing solutions. Hair will not grow for about three weeks after the waxing, so you can enjoy your vacation.

Conquer Your Fear of the Bikini Wax
June 2, 2008 · No Comments
Spring is coming and with it, bikini season. Whether you’re planning for a spring break vacation, an anniversary or birthday celebration, or whether you’d just like to fall into a bikini-line grooming habit for the summer, waxing is the best way to remove unwanted hair. Waxing can seem intimidating and few women readily jump at the chance to expose such a sensitive area to potential pain. Here are a few tips to conquer your fear.

First, it’s important to know the two kinds of bikini waxes available. There’s the bikini line wax and the Brazilian wax. A bikini line wax is just that, a wax that removes hair from the area near the elastic in your underwear or bathing suit bottoms. For this sort of wax, it’s not uncommon to leave your underwear or bottoms on while the aesthetician simply folds them out of the way and waxes off any hair that would be too near the edge. If this is your first venture into waxing I would recommend this variety to start. This is the least sensitive area and in general, the hair in this region is not as thick or coarse, making the waxing quicker and less painful. A bikini wax can remove only a small amount of hair or, if you chose, can leave you with only a small amount, generally only covering the labia.
A Brazilian wax is intended to remove all of the hair from the bikini region. Your aesthetician and you can decide which variety of wax is best for you, depending on your personal choice and comfort with the waxing procedure. A Brazilian has become increasingly popular in the United States and when performed by a licensed beauty technician, it is a perfectly safe procedure. Of course, every woman’s threshold of pain varies, but truly a Brazilian wax simply sounds more intimidating than it is. If you’re the adventurous sort, go ahead and schedule a Brazilian for your first waxing appointment. If you’d eventually like to go completely bare but would rather ‘test the waters’ first, schedule a simple bikini line wax.

Waxing Gurus and Suzanne Hoggan to Provide Items, supporting Silent Auction for One World Cafe First Annual Fundraiser in Salt Lake City, Utah
May 30, 2008 · No Comments
Waxing Gurus of Salt Lake City, Utah has announced its support for the First Annual Fundraiser of “One World Everybody Eats”. Waxing Gurus and Suzanne Hoggan’s other company, Niceology Planet will be donating items for the silent auction. The event is to be held on Wednesday, June 11th, 5-10 PM. The location will be the Gallivan Center and tickets are price based on what you can afford to donate. For more information on the event call 801-519-2002. Tickets for this event can also be obtained at Waxing Gurus, 4429 S. 2950 E. , Salt Lake City, Utah 84124, Telephone: 801-347-0700 or 801-272-0131.
The One World Everybody Eats foundation is an outgrowth of One World Cafe in Salt Lake City, Utah. The concept began when owner Denise Cerreta in mid 2003 had an ephiphany to serve organic food, let people choose their own portions and let them price those portions themselves.
Since then, she’s gained local, national and world-wide notoriety for her pay as you go prices, seasonal no menu organic cuisine, living wages, minimal food waste and healthy meals that are within everyone’s reach.
By encouraging people to savor the meal, Ms. Cerreta is attempting to help people see the value of food as more than a mere consumable but rather, as a glue and a catalyst for healthy people, relationships and communities. Customers are able to seat themselves in a relaxed atmosphere that is condusive to conversation; opposite to the usual public dining experience of isolation. Because our customers choose their own prices, their portions tend to be more mindful and reflect that they will actually want to eat, with the result being little or no food waste. We’ve realized that this makes more food available and we expect this will make the concept exportable and adoptable worldwide.
Philosophy meets business through her desire to pay her workers a living wage, as well provide volunteer options for those who would prefer a “hand up” rather than a hand out. For every hour someone gives to our foundation, they can receive a voucher for a full meal, and children under 8 can eat with a parent on the same vouncher. Plus, there is always a complimentary staple dish that everyone can eat regardless of means. Denise and the staff knew the model was successful on the day that there were several people eating, all of whom had volunteered earlier in the week and had redeemed their vouchers. But all were eating anonymously and with dignity.
One World Everybody Eats wants to put a community kitchen in every city in the world. Our “short” list of U.S. cities includes New York, Washington D.C. , Pittsburgh, Iowa City, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and Santa Fe. In the cross-cultural support tradition of the “Sister Cities” program, the foundation would like pair U.S. locations with cities in the developing world. To learn more, watch our video at YouTube.com, and see a short employee slideshow at MySpace.com.
